Topic 1: What is HIPAA

As part of her employee orientation, Jan met with Chris, who works with the medical center’s HIPAA officer.

Chris told Jan that HIPAA established the right of confidentiality for all patient healthcare information, accountability of medical records use, and standards for medical information release.

For Jan, that means that the health information she handles in her work can only be used for treatment, payment and operations.
